Football Returns! Well, Sort Of...

I am going to be completely honest, I only watched part of this ugly as hell game. I don't get too wrapped up in alot of the pre-season games. Because they are PRE-SEASON! There is really nothing that the average fan can glean from the game itself. Those who live and breathe football, who study stat sheets, who can break down game tape, play fantasy football, they can get more out of the games. I am on the fringe of the latter category, but really don't care much about the pre-season.

For one thing, the Cowboys couldn't figure out that you need to RUN THE DAMN BALL when you are on the 2 yard line. Especially when you have, as the illustrious Herm Edwards described, "The Largest Offensive Line In Captivity." YOU RUN THE DAMN BALL.

The Bengals looked shaky. The defense might be something to contend with if Pac-Man holds up to what he showed last night.

I dunno... do you get into pre-season?

'Cuse Goin Down!!!!

Ok, so I had to back away from NCAA tournament talk due to my beloved Jayhawks getting eliminated in the second round. BUT, watching the rest of the upsets have helped ease the pain. Tonight's episode has Syracuse, another Number 1 Seed going down to Butler, a Number 5. Not a HUGE upset number wise, but, still pretty damn good to see!

Tournament time!

Alright guys... getting close to the NCAA Tournament! Anyone else geeking up for it? I am going to the first round of the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City today to watch a few teams play well but ultimately lose to Kansas.

Havee a great sports day wherever you are!

NBC = HOCKEY FAIL!

Relegating the US vs. Canada hockey game to MSNBC instead of putting it in prime time on NBC was a HUGEORMOUS mistake of epic proportions. The ratings would have justified bumping the excitment of frigging ICE DANCING. Seriously... Ice Dancing over the Hockey Game of these olympic games? There better be a moving van ready for the genius who made that call.

The game itself was one of the most exciting, exhausting games I have ever seen (barring the 1980 Miracle On Ice). It had everything - great power plays, penalty killing excellence, amazing shots that can only be made by the greatest players in the world, speed, power, fantastic hits, passing... simply a clinic.

Let's just hope they follow up with a Gold to finish the tournament! U S A, U S A!!!!

The Draft Lab?

Holy hell. I turn on the magic picture box to watch some ESPN as I begin to wake up for my day. Typical male, right? Anyway, They promote a segment called Tne ESPN NFL Draft Lab with Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay. Now, I listen to these two guys during their segments on ESPN radio shows as the world readies itself for the NFL Combine and the Draft. I like their insight, their breakdowns and their information. So, I had hopes that this would be good and informative. When the show segment came on, I took hands off the laptop and focused my attention on Mel and Todd as they broke down their Top 5 Wide Receivers and Tight Ends. Well, I THOUGHT they would do that. Instead, each had their Top 5s listed on the board, and discussed two of each and then a third that was not on the board. The whole time, I found that Kiper would take the segment over any time McShay would take a breath. Seriously, Kiper came off like a blowhard (which he quite probably is anyway) who is starved for attention.

Bottom line? Mel Kiper doesn't share nicely with others. McShay is a great draft analyst and I think Kiper somewhat fears him.

On a side note, why the hell is the basketball arena for Mississippi State called "The Hump?" I just saw that and find it quite amusing.

This Weekend

So I am off today and was anticipating a humongoid list of honey-do chores from my lovely wifey. However, I was amazingly surprised at the shortness of her list, and the fact that the items on the list were quite simple! I think I am being set up. Probably. Dunno.

Anyway, I have to work this weekend (on Saturday and Sunday I will put in about 27 hours). That leaves very little free time. Which sucks, because I am a dork and love The Olympics, which start tonight. Not sure what I will be missing out on, but I will try to keep posted via interwebz, twitter (are you following me yet?), and radio.

So, what are you doing? Watching The Olympics? Checking out the NBA All-Star Weekend? Going Clubbing?

Brett Favre - Apparently One Tough Sumbitch

Guys, everyone has their take on how Brett Favre finished the season. Yes he threw an interception. Yes his team lost. However, if you want to see why he threw the pick instead of running for the first down, click THIS LINK to see photos of his ankle and hamstring after the NFC Championship game. If these truly are pictures of Favre's injuries, knowing he even finished the game is an accomplishment.

Minnesota Vikings' Bryant McKinnie booted from Pro Bowl squad - ESPN

How frigging stupid is this? You are selected for the Pro Bowl, and you skip practices. Then you get kicked off the team? They can't convince the stars to play in this game, but you want to miss practice Bryant McKinnie? You deserve to lose the bonus you are likely due to be paid for making the Pro Bowl.

Blah weekend in Sports continues

In Men's Basketball, Texas gets upset by Baylor in Austin, Syracuse avoids the upset, Georgetown bounces Duke and tonight my Jayhawks are hopefully going to crush K-State in Manhattan.

College Football offers up the Senior bowl/Tebow Bowl. Ummm yawn.

Tomorrow we get the "Pro" Bowl in the NFL. I put Pro in quotes because the only criteria to play in the game now is that you are a professional player. Almost none of the players who were voted in will play and even the reserves are on the second, third or even fifth choice. Is ANYONE going to watch this damn thing? Not I. I am actually going to go out and run errands with the wifey. Build up some goodwill so I can enjoy the real game, the SUPER BOWL next week!

So what are YOU watching?

Superbowl Is Set

So, that happened...

Colts get to play the Saints in the Superbowl in two weeks. Not sure if that was what I wanted to see, but not like I have any real choice in the matter.

In the AFC Championship, the NY Jets actually were tearing the Colts up. At one point being up 14-6! The Jet Defense was really frustrating Peyton Manning and Mark Sanchez showed why he was the #5 pick in this years draft. Then Manning woke up. The second half completely belonged to the Colts. The Jets pretty much should have just stayed in the locker room. Could have saved some bruises.

In the nightcap, the Saints pulled off an overtime victory on the foot of their kicker (yes, he has a name, no it really isn't that important). This was a true slugfest from the opening drives (each resulting in touchdowns). Brett Favre was absolutely beaten up in this game. I am fairly sure that his body is today as purple as his home uniform from all the bruising. Personally, if the Vikings had played clean, without the 95165467 fumbles from Peterson, or the two interceptions from Favre, I have NO doubt the Vikings would have eviscerated the Saints. But, that is why they play the game.

I seriously do not see how the Superbowl could be as exciting as the NFC Championship was. But, it should be fun. Two incredibly high octane offenses facing off. Should be fun. Hopefully I will get to post a few articles prior to then, including a pick. Until then, let me know what you think!

NFLChampionship Games Set

So, Brett Favre reminded Dallas that Tony Romo is more comfortable laying on the field than running down it in victory. How bad was THAT beatdown? I had thought the Vikings would win, but in a much closer contest.

And, Drew Brees ripped the torch out of Kurt Warner's hand as the Saints crushed the Cardinals. Reggie Kardashian Bush even made a showing!

This is going to be one HELL of a match up this weekend. Definitely sets up to be better than the AFC side.

It was nice that the Ravens actually showed up in Indianapolis. However, they were no match for the Colts. Really, they had no chance.

The shock of the weekend was brought by Rexy Ryan and The Sanchize. I picked the J-E-T-S JetsJetsJets (I feel that I have to type it that way) to beat the Bengals last week, but believed the Chargers would bring them down to reality. The Defense carried them into an improbable date with Peyton (the better actor) Manning. Now, I am still trying to decide if that is actually a prize.

In any case, the games should be entertaining this weekend. Enjoy!

Brett Favre - American Idol Fan

Who knew that when he isn't figuring out how to rip the hearts out of Dallas Cowboy Fans, Brett Favre is a closet American Idol fan? There are many famous fans of the show, and now, we can add the Viking QB to the list. Coolness!

In fact, Favre is such a fan, he can even sing some of the audition songs! Check out his rendition of the instant classic - "Pants On The Ground."

Mark McGwire Finally Grew His Balls Back

So, Mark McGwire actually admitted to using steroids while playing Major League Baseball. It is about frigging time. The entire PLANET knew he was using, he just did not have the testicular fortitude to own up to it.

However, he is still lying to himself, as well as the rest of us, by saying the steroids did not affect his game whatsoever. He claims it was merely to recover from injuries and the wear and tear of the game and workouts. "There is not a pill or injection that can give the hand/eye coordination to hit a ball." Well Mark, the pills and injections provide you with the muscle to launch a ball into the stratosphere. And THAT, sir, impacted your game significantly.

Granted, McGwire was facing pitchers who were also juicing, so it was sort of a level playing field. Plus, the list of players who were using is long and distinguished. But still, come on man, just completely admit it.

Does this enhance his Hall Of Fame campaign? Some say yes. Buster Olney of ESPN says that the announcement firmly cements the fact he will never make it in. Not quite sure in my own mind. I remember watching his run to break 61. I cheered for him because he was a nice guy and could mash a ball like few we had ever seen before. I would love to see him in the Hall to represent the Steroid Era. Put him in and fully disclose how he got there. Praise his accomplishments and condemn his steroid use.

What do you think?

Wild Card Weekend...

Holy crap what a terrible weekend! I thought I was looking good by predicting that the Jets would win (actually thought 24-17 but missed it by 3). THEN came the blowout of the Iggles, collapse and ending of the Patriot Dynasty, and then the craziness of Arizona v Green Bay. Don't have a frigging clue which way to go now with picks.

Also, it looks like Pete Carroll will bail on USC and go to the SeaPidgeons? How interesting is that? And how soon will the penalties be handed down from the NCAA?

Talk amongst yourselves and let me know your thoughts!

Florida's Meyer resigns amid health concerns - College Football - Rivals.com

Wow, Urban Meyer resigns? How about THAT Gators? While I certainly respect the man for what he has done for the Florida Gators and College Football, I am going to enjoy watching how the program continues without him. Personally, I hate the Florida Gators. I hope they struggle for a while.

In all honesty, I hope Meyer returns at some point once his health improves. He HAS done quite a bit for football and he brings a competitive fire wherever he goes.

In any case, get well soon Urban. The football world will miss you.

And The Heisman Goes To...

Running Back Mark Ingram of The University of Alabama. Ingram became the first member of The Crimson Tide to win the award in what is reported to be the closest vote in Heisman history.

I was pulling for Toby Gerhart (Running Back from Stanford) who finished 2nd, or Ndamukong Suh (Defensive Tackle from Nebraska) who finished 4th, to win, but am glad that Ingram won. I hate Tebow (as a player - he is too good of a human to hate), and can not pull for anyone from Texas (BOOMER!!).

Ingram is the son of former New York Giant star Mark Ingram. Ingram Sr. is currently serving a prison sentence for bank fraud and money laundering charges. He did get to see his son receive the honor on television.
